Monday of the Fifth Week of Easter

The Advocate, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name he will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you.

John 14:21-26

The peace of the Lord be with you. In many of my reflections lately I’ve talked about the presence of God walking with us. God shows his presence to us in a variety of ways. Probably the most intimate way that he shows us his presence is through the Eucharist when we gather around his table. Another intimate way God travels with us this through the gift of the Holy Spirit, the gift of the third person of the Holy Trinity.

In our reading today from John, Jesus reminds us that it is through the gift of the Holy Spirit that we will be formed and shaped as we await for his final return. We must also nurture these gifts of the spirit to take root in us. Just like we are careful about the food we take in for the health of our bodies, we must also be very careful to what we subject our spirit and our will to as well. Improper spiritual nutrition can hinder our ability to hear the call and carry out the commands of the Holy Spirit.

Gracious Lord, help us today to receive your Word in our spirit and protect us from those things that will only lead us away from you and the fullness of life. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
