Monday of the Third Week of Easter

Do not work for food that perishes
but for the food that endures for eternal life,
which the Son of Man will give you.
For on him the Father, God, has set his seal.

So they said to him,

What can we do to accomplish the works of God?

Jesus answered and said to them,

This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent.

— John 6 22-29

Peace be with you. When I was younger I used to enjoy new trends, new fads; they spoke to me, it felt cool like I was always on the edge something fresh. Most of those things only stayed in vogue for a brief period of time. At this stage of life, I really prefer the things that have been tested by time and that seem to last. At this stage of life, I want to pass on what it is I’ve learned — perhaps some skills I have acquired and some insights — to those who are entering adulthood and leadership roles.

Developmental psychologist Erik Erikson said that at this later stage of life we have a choice between generativity and despair. In other words, we can either pass on what we’ve learned helping others to grow, or become frustrated by the things that will not be accomplished.

The things of this world are passing and Jesus reminds us today that we really shouldn’t invest in those things that will not last. God’s love, God’ s will, God’s plan is everlasting; it is eternal. The only thing that’s required is that we believe. God will provide the graces and all else that we need to build that permanent timeless relationship.

Heavenly Father please help me to believe and trust in you. Keep my heart from being hardened so that it may be receptive to, and touched by, your grace. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
