Amen, amen, I say to you,
it was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven;
my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.
For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven
and gives life to the world.
So they said to Jesus,
Sir, give us this bread always.
Jesus said to them,
I am the bread of life;
whoever comes to me will never hunger,
and whoever believes in me will never thirst.

The peace of the Lord be with you. Someone once said, “we live in world of great abundance and if you do not believe it just look at crab grass.” While this observation is meant to be tongue in cheek and humorous, it is pointing to a greater, more profound truth.
This truth is articulated so well in the Gospel reading today. God gives without ceasing and has done so since the dawn of creation. Creation is far more vast than just our tiny blue planet and the small portion of that planet where we live out our lives. Despite all that God has to care for, he knows us intimately and provides for our specific needs.
Each time the sun rises, each time we are given another day of life, each time we enjoy a meal, or the love of another person, we experience the direct care of God himself. That care is not limited to our time here on earth — it extends beyond the bounds of this world and will welcome us into the world that is to come.
In that place we will meet the One who provides us with heavenly bread and holy sustenance. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
