Monday of Holy Week

Mary took a liter of costly perfumed oil made from genuine aromatic nard and anointed the feet of Jesus and dried them with her hair; the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.

John 12 1-11

Perhaps one of my favorite films depicting the life of Jesus is one that ran during the holy season for much of the 70s and 80s. The movie Jesus of Nazareth touchingly portrays the life of Jesus, it really was a source of inspiration for me. In this scene that is played out above in the Gospel reading today it is depicted as a moment of high worship, reconciliation, gratitude, praise, a recognition of Jesus as Son of God. It is clear in this movie that Mary is a woman who recognizes that she is a person who has many shortcomings and that she has been healed at a distance by the love of Jesus. Like many of us who have been touched by the Lord, at that moment she only desires to lavish her love and praise upon him in such an act of unadulterated love, devotion, and humility.

Like Mary in the Gospel today may our hearts overflow with joy and gratitude for all that God has done and is doing for us. May the love of this woman for her savior remind us that we are called to lavish that love upon others. As we enter into this Holy Week may the protection, comfort, and love of our mighty God permeate your very being. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
